Causes of Erlenmeyer Flask Deformity

Remember Mr CHONG is a chemistry professor carrying an Erlenmeyer Flask

C – Craniometaphyseal dysplasias
H – Hemoglobinopathies (Sickle cell, Thalassemia)
O – Osteopetrosis, Osteochondromatosis
N – Niemann-Pick
G – Gaucher disease

This page is the quick memory aid only. For the full reference, including the three types of Erlenmeyer flask deformity, all 20 reported causes, how often the sign is actually present in each disorder, and the measurement that separates it from normal metaphyseal flaring, see Erlenmeyer flask deformity: causes, types and how to measure it.

Note that CHONG covers the common causes but none of the craniotubular dysplasias beyond craniometaphyseal dysplasia. Frontometaphyseal dysplasia, which was the single most consistent association in the International Skeletal Dysplasia Registry, is not in it.
